Since the publication of Las Niñas, A Collection of Childhood Memories in 2008, I continued to share my writings and community outreach by founding Barrio Writers in 2009, a reading and writing program aimed to empower youth through creative writing, higher education and the cultural arts and hosting Wild Womyn Writers since 2010, workshops that create neutral spaces which empower womyn to explore their creative spirits, free themselves from societal restrictions and learn to embrace their natural instincts. Most recently, I founded LibroMobile and co-founded Crear Studio in Santa Ana, California.

Sarah Garcia-7Over the last 12 years, I’ve also taught English as a Second Language, Spanish, and Language Arts to all ages. In 2010 Senator Lou Correa honored me with the “Women Making a Difference” award and in 2011 I was awarded for “Outstanding Contributions to Education” by the Orange County Department of Education in California. I also taught English Composition courses at Texas State University and obtained a M.F.A. in Creative Writing with a cognate in Media Studies in May 2015.

I write poetry, creative non-fiction and fiction. My writing has appeared in LATINO Magazine, Contrapuntos III, Outrage: A Protest Anthology For Injustice in a Post 9/11 World, La Tolteca Zine, As/Us Journal, The Acentos Review, among others. I am an Editor for the annual Barrio Writers anthology; the 5th edition was a finalist for the “Best Educational Young Adult Book” by the International Latino Book Awards. In August 2015, SFA Press released the 6th edition, and has since published the anthology annually. I am also a member of the Macondo Writer’s Workshop founded by Sandra Cisneros and Co-editor of the pariahs, writing from outside the margins anthology.

Most recently, I was featured in Kirikus Reviews and awarded for Santana’s Fairy Tales, which is supported in part by The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, through a grant supporting the Artist-in-Residence initiative at Grand Central Art Center (GCAC) in Santa Ana, California. Early 2018, I participated in a collaborative artist residency at The Guesthouse, Cork, Ireland and in October 2018, I will be honored as an Emerging Artist at the 19th Annual Orange County Arts Awards. While at GCAC, I spend my days in downtown Santa Ana working on various projects, including a travel memoir, and a forthcoming feminist short stories collection titled A Womyn’s Place.
